Post by Devil Thu Mar 04, 2010 1:39 pm

Yes, I know similar topics have been opened before.
There's Snake's topic that contains his list of movies. Pretty ego-centric topic if you ask me Razz Razz, and then there's Cyb's topic (I think) about the Top 10 movies...

However, in this topic, I would like to discuss movies, since I believe most of us watch them (and enjoy them hopefully). So I would like to hear reviews and interpretations of the movies you've seen. It doesn't have to be a long review, just anything longer than "it sucks" or "I liked it" would be great.
I think that if people see positive reviews and other people talking about movies that they liked and that has changed something within them, they might be more tempted to see them. Smile

Here, I'm gonna take the first step. The last movie I saw that made an impression on me was:

Moon (2009) - official trailer - Moon is a movie about a man who has a 3 year contract on our Moon at a minning factory. It seems that humanity has discovered a way to produce energy by extracting the solar energy that is retained in our Moon's rocks, and this one man, Sam, is the only living being on Moon that is working there, having as his only companion the factory's robot, Gerty.
The main part of the movies is about his final 2 weeks there which for some reason seem to be the hardest ones for him, as he starts seeing things, which both him, and we as watchers wonder if they are real or not.

Saying more than this would give things away, but I'll just say that this is a movie for those who enjoy a slow paced flick, filled with questions and perhaps not enough answers. Sam's character seems so real that Moon's empty, silent and dead atmosphere becomes alive and vivid through his performance, and the whole soundtrack of this movie is absolutely perfect and fitting for it.

Well... I'm looking forward for other reviews and opinions about this or other movies.

Interstate 60
There are many movies out there, but this is one I'll recommend.

Movies MV5BMTMzNzY0OTg3NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDM5MjYxMQ@@._V1._SX334_SY475_

Neal Oliver is a young artist, but his father doesn't like his choice and wants him to go to Oxford. Everything changes after Neal's meeting with O.W.Grant, who grants exactly one wish per person, as his name suggests. Neal wishes for answers, and so he must travel to the nonexistent Danver by the nonexistent Interstate 60. In this trip he hopes to find the girl of his dreams, following the trail of her photos on the advertising stands along the route. Many encounters await him ahead.

Shutter Island

The story takes place in the 50s. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a marshall of the U.S. Police who's in charge to investigate, with his teamnate, on a missing female patient in an psychiatric hospital located on an island. Access is only by seaway. Patients are classified as "very dangerous". And the island is...pretty well guarded.

Throughout the film, the general idea revolves around madness and illusion. I personally found that the effect was fairly well transmitted to viewers.
Each person I know, that have seen the movie, liked it (myself included Very Happy ).

PS : Great topic idea dev Very Happy Cool

I'm glad to see some movement already Smile

Yea, I've been meaning to see Shutter Island for quite some time, it looks nice (in a very sick way).
But I have a question Martz, is Shutter Island a movie theaters movie? What do I mean by that: Is it worth it seeing it in a movie theater? Because there are some movies with nice special effects and with a very nice soundtrack which just seem that much better on the big screen with surround sound, and then there are movies that have more impact on you if you watch them quietly, in your dark and scary room. Razz

Interestate 60's story seems interesting. Sounds like something I would enjoy, so I already "arranged" the movie. Planning to see it soon Wink

Personally, I don't think my room is dark or scary Evil or Very Mad Razz

However, I'm not going very often see a movie in a movie theater. If you got a large size TV, it might works. But now, I've got one scene of the movie in mind which, I think, would be preferable to see in a movie theater. So I think its worth it..(By that, I mean I don't regret having paid even if I could watch it at home).
There are flashbacks several times, dreams and some hallucinations you know, I haven't seen him on TV but I think effects are better rendered in a movie theater. Now, its up to you clown

Fight Club (1999)

#1 - The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not talk about Fight Club.

#2 - The second rule of Fight Club is, you DO NOT talk about Fight Club.

#3 - If someone says stop, goes limp, taps out, the fight is over.

#4 - Two guys to a fight.

#5 - One fight at a time.

#6 - No shirts, no shoes.

#7 - Fights will go on as long as they have to.

#8 - If this is your first night at Fight Club, you have to fight.

#9 - If you've read all above rules you're a fag.

I saw "Fight Club" some time ago, so I don't really remember it very well. Of course, that might also be caused by the small impression the movie made on me. I guess I was just expecting something else. You know when your friends all tell you it's awesome and they won't stop talking about it and then you finally watch it and... you're just not that impressed? Well, maybe it's one of those movies that only becomes "special" the second time around Razz

Donnie Darko

Some days ago I finished watching Donnie Darko. And after I actually read the "The philosophy of time traveling" (a book mentioned in the movie) I kinda found myself on a path to understand the movie more. I want to know who else has seen it and what do they have to say.
As for the movie recommendation... well, I would recommend it to those who want a deep, profound experience with their own minds, cause this movie will be making you think a bit (if anyone has seen the movie "Memento", it's a bit like that).
And hey, if after you've seen the movie, you're looking at the screen and thinking "oh, wtf...", then trust me, it's okay. I said the same thing before I started thinking about the movie Razz

Guys, have you ever seen Russian movie "Cargo 200" by Aleksei Balabanov?
Here is the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_200
I am not sure it has English translation, but if u can find it on your movie databases or torrent trackers - watch it.
But if you are a girl, or you got weak nerves - don't even try to download.
Forbidden on TV, it has become the most discussed movie on post-soviet space.
It is anti-soviet, but it describes the period where i was born, that's why it has a part of nativeness to me.
Though I'm not sure everybody of you will understand it.

There's nothing more to that movie than Donnie Darko being on LSD and seeing random rabbit & planes crashing in his room.

Movies Empty Re: Movies

Post by Crapper Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:04 pm

So, I'd like to add some movies that my favorite author Stephen King has written and that have later been made into movies.
Here it goes:

Secret Window (Original title by SK: Secret Window, Secret Garden)
A man accuses author Mort Rainey of stealing one of his story ideas. Rainey, who is going through an ugly divorce, attempts to prove to his accuser that his own story was published first, but all evidence to support his argument begins to disappear, along with the people who might confirm his case.
It's one of the better adoptations of SKs' work. The best known being The Green Mile.

The Shining (Original title by SK: The Shining)
Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their young son Danny move into the Overlook Hotel, where Jack has been hired as the winter caretaker. Cut off from civilization for months, Jack hopes to battle alcoholism and uncontrolled rage while writing a play. Evil forces residing in the Overlook – which has a long and violent history – covet young Danny for his precognitive powers and exploit Jack’s weaknesses to try to claim the boy. "Heeeeere's Johnny!!" "REDRUM" "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and the list goes on. So many things from this movie is still referred to today. Although the movie is 25+ years old, I'd dare to venture voting it one of the top horror movies of all time.

IT (Original title by SK: IT)
A promise made twenty-eight years ago calls seven adults to reunite in Derry, Maine, where as teenagers they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city's children. Unsure that their Losers Club had vanquished the creature all those years ago, the seven had vowed to return to Derry if IT should ever reappear. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that summer return as they prepare to do battle with the monster lurking in Derry's sewers once more.

More of his books have been adapted to the big screen but I find those mentioned here to be the best of them.

Another great movie: Parasomnia.
It's about a guy who, while visiting his friend in the psyche ward, stumbles upon a girl (Laura), suffering from Parasomnia (She sleeps more than she's awake). An insane serial killer (Volpe) in a padded cell next to her thinks of her as his possesion but the guy is smitten and takes her away the first chance he gets. This makes Volpe who can somehow enter Lauras' dreams do all he can to break out and find Laura again. OFC he breaks out and starts to track down Laura. I won't mention more but let you watch it and judge for yourself whether it's worh anything or not. I will say this however: The acting is far from top-notch but considering the cast and what they had to work with it came out awesome.

So, that's all from this film critic for now. Maybe more will come and hopefully I'll get to read more reviews here. I know the movies I've written about here are kind of old (bear in mind that so am I) but they're still worth watching although they don't have all the hoo-haa-wuich effects of modern day movies.

I haven't seen the rest, but I have seen The Shining, Crap.
I saw that when I was a kid and it really made an impression on me. First time I saw that on Tv, I got scared and went to sleep so I remember after some time, when it was going to pass again, I set my mind that I HAD to watch that movie and face my fears! Lolz...
So I did! And I felt like the bravest 10 or 11 year old boy around Razz Razz
I remember that aside from it being scary it actually had a pretty involving story and it was really interesting. It's one of those horror movies that draws you in. I really liked it at that time. I should rewatch that someday and see if I still find that green lady to be so spooky clown

Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief

It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they're not happy: Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother. As Percy adapts to his newly discovered status as a demi-god (his father is Poseidon), he finds himself caught between the battling titans of Mt. Olympus. He and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy's mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Truth be told it wasn't as good as I'd hoped for. Judge for yourselves but the review is here from me to you. Only reason I watched it was to see if it was fit for Marcus to watch.

Interstate 60

Ok, so I've seen the movie Sash, and you were right, it's a good one. It's been a while since I've seen a movie like this...a movie that would keep me guessing just what will happen next? It's so bizarre, funny and interesting at the same time, you just never get bored. Nice suggestion, Sash, I recommend it to everyone.
If you just want to see an easy going movie, packed with a couple of laughs and memorable quotes, then Interstate 60 is just the movie you're looking for Wink

Btw... I remember seeing "IT" but not all of it I think. I remember a clown and some very sharp teeth, but I can't really remember the story.clown

As far as Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief - to be honest, after watching the trailer I wasn't really expecting some major breaktrough movie, and your rather "direct" review Razz Crap, just confirms that. My girl might like it though, she's a nut for the Harry Potter saga, so I'm thinking she'll probably like this as well. Very Happy

@ Fly: I've read about the movie a bit on wiki. Seems like a heavy one. I might look into it if I want to get depressed.

Honestly, being a Harry Potter nut, I think she won't enjoy it. Although it's a director of one of the HP movies, it really sucked big time. Comparing this to HP just isn't possible. Ok, there were some OK effects and all but it was as if the actors hadn't been given any real training when it came to the fighting scenes. On top of that, coming to think of it, the plot was so-so. Not really like anything seen before but also not like anything I'd watch again.
I won't say that watching paint dry is more exciting (to me at least) but I'd say it's a close 2nd or 3rd.

"We all FLOAT down here"
"Don't you want your baloon?"
"Kiss me, fatboy!"

These are some of the quotes from IT. You should watch it again... all the way.

Interstate 60 - Will report back after I see it.

So yea, I remembered well enough the sharp theeth of that clown...
Well, it's a classic after all, so I'm gonna try and see it again.

Solomon Kane
- official trailer -

I saw this last night at the movie theater, and I must say, it was better than I expected.

Not to give too much away... Solomon Kane is a character made by Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian) which has now finally made it to the big screen.

Solomon is not your goody two shoes hero, but rather a very bloodthirsty antihero, which feels at home on the battlefield (like he himself says in the movie) and that is a religous fanatic by heart.

However, after an encounter with one of THE Devil's "subbordinates", he finds himself on the edge of losing his soul - the price to pay for taking so many lives -, and thus he changes his ways, leaving the warrior inside him as just a shadow of what he used to be, and trying to find his path to redemption by living a life of peace.

Solomon Kane stands out as an idenpendent movie, with a dark theme, an interesting story and some nice action sequences. Don't expect to see any flashy moves or acrobatic jumps, because Solomon wouldn't spare his energy on useless moves, but rather on precise, effective and deadly one-two slices.
The acting is good although most of the characters feel underdeveloped, and yes there are some cheesy quotes and cliches, but somehow most of them feel just right Wink

I mostly enjoyed the movie, and I would say that for those looking for an adventure, with some good action, heart and soul, you should definitely see this.
The only let down - I really think they could have worked harder on the ending.
