Experience with Sony vaio? Empty Experience with Sony vaio?

Post by Anette Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:43 am

I'm gonna buy a laptop pretty soon and was considering a Sony Vaio.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them, or if anyone knows another laptop to recommend? Not a mac, so don't even go there ;D

So far I'm considering: SONY VAIO VGNFW31J

I still have my desktop computer so it doesn't have to be the fastest and best laptop out there.

Any help will be appreciated Wink

All I can do is recommend NOT to buy an acer, even though you get good specs for a low price their support is rather bad. But since you already thought of an Sony Vaio, it doesn't really apply.

Sony is quite well known for their High quality screens. XBRITE or something, witch actually pumps up your battery life (actually turning off pixels when their black).

The design of the Vaio notebook line is absolutely gorgeous. Very simplistic, small, thin (i didn't look at the dimensions, but when I saw one in real life, I thought it was quite small and reminded me of the thin apple notebooks).

Also, I believe the Vaio line all have the blue-ray playback, which is a nice addition and future proof.

A few things to look out for with notebooks are:
If they get hot.
Their noise level.

these two are very annoying and I advise you to read a few reviews about the notebooks you had in mind which address the heat and noise problems and see how well they perform.

(This is btw not all from personal experience, except for the acer and the vaoi design thing)

I gotta admit when I thought of Sony Vaio its basically based on the design I just love it Embarassed

and I had an acer a few years back.. wasn't a success so I'm never going back to that again Wink

Thing is about laptops it never says how loud they are which is really annoying since its a big part of reasonings behind choosing one. =/

well before anything you have to say why you are buying it? or better said, what will you use it for?

because most laptops are designed for specific use like business (fast proc, big hard) or media (great resolutions, good graphic card) or home (average of all) or even gaming laptops (graph and proc/memory) etc.

not gonna be used for anything special. Not for games and such except maybe babo.. Not really sure yet to be honest.
But its not one I'm gonna carry around with me, so I'm not looking for a netbook or any of the other small ones.

well my best suggestion is that you think exactly what you will use it for (is it complete replacement of desktop?). because you will buy much more useful laptop that way.

then why are you gonna buy it? Rolling Eyes baah, rich people...never know what to do with their money tongue Wink

Well, to say the truth I never had a laptop, but also knew people that did and they always talked pretty nice about Toshiba laptop's. Dev has one and never got in into any type of trouble. Doesn't make any loud noise, doesn't overheat, and is design is pretty nice...So Toshiba's laptop's are always a thing to have in mind when you're going to buy a laptop in my opinion. Well, but that's just my advise. Smile

Buy one that is both Mnk and idiot resistant. They are quite expensive but its worth it.

(on a more serious note, I had a VAIO -> was good, but watch out where/who you buy it from because more often than not you will spend the next few days unistalling the hideous amounts of crap that come pre-installed. I very nearly screamed in rage.) GL though! Razz

hmm.. think before buy? Rolling Eyes
what an unusual idea.. maybe I should try it Wink

and its not gonna replace anything, since I still have my desktop Smile

@dysp: it does matter to me what it looks like, why not buy one that looks good also? Razz
and battery time isn't that important since its not one I'm gonna take with me.

if you have Toshiba don't recommend that gero... seeing as it always seemed to break Wink

I got Sony Vaio SR-11MR.
Before him i was using Samsung r25 (or r20, i dont remember).
Vaio is much more comfortable.

+
small weight
splendid design
nice bright colours of monitor
large battery
nice technical support (helped me to make a downgrade from vista to xp)

-
too expensive (but i never regretted that i bought it)
too hard in repair, if it breaks
there are some tracks on the monitor from the keys on keyboard (i heard it is the problem off all sony vaios).
